“With time and with straw… medlars ripen.” An old Italian proverb that, perhaps, speaks much less about fruit than we might imagine. The common medlar, the kind our grandparents knew, is hard, sour, and astringent when freshly picked. To become good, it needs something that today we find increasingly hard to give: time. Traditionally, it was left to rest on straw. Slowly, it would soften, lose its astringency, and turn sweet. Those who came before us, observing nature, understood something simple: some things cannot be rushed. Today we live in a world where everything must be immediate. An answer, a delivery, a result. And we’ve almost started to consider waiting as wasted time. But the medlar reminds us that not everything that takes time is delayed. There are fruits, people, ideas, and projects that simply need their time. Because sometimes we are not waiting in vain. We are ripening. Today it’s the medlar, our Perfect Fruit of the Day.
